Driven: 2013 Audi S7

Rule number one of the S7 has to do with where it sits in the world—it is not merely a V-8 variant of the A7 (albeit a biturbocharged V-8 with 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque). That’s a difficult rule to remember, particularly when one looks at Audi’s current lineup.

Why All That Weaving Around On The Way To The Grid?

By Paul Haney / July 16, 2013

By Paul Haney
Excerpted from Speed Secrets Weekly

At the start of a race or track session we see drivers weaving back and forth across the track. Ask a driver why all the swerving and you'll hear, "I'm getting the tires up to temperature." Well, I don't think that's what's happening. Most of the tread surface is cooling, not heating. And, since rubber is a poor conductor of heat, very little of the frictional heating on the tread surface gets into the bulk of the tire.

We reckon that diversity is worth celebrating. Whether in engine type (V-12, V-8, flat 6) or drivetrain layout (Front, Mid, Rear), or country of origin (Italian, German, American), automotive diversity brings a smile. So too with gender. Men and women both have their charms and mysteries, and we celebrate those with this exclusive 'Diversity' Tee.

Autoglym Rapid Detailer / $15

Rapid Detailer removes light dirt, restores shine and leaves a layer of polymeric protection on surfaces.

If your car is in between clean and dirty, Rapid Detailer is perfect. It will not remove or affect polishes, waxes or sealants and actually tops up existing protection.

You can also apply it to rubber, plastic, bare metal and chrome. If you have driven your car to a show, or are displaying it somewhere, this is perfect to get it back to 100%. If you have ever seen us maintaining cars at a show, we will have been using Rapid Detailer, it is our ‘go to’ product. Team up with a Hi-Tech Finishing Cloth and it is the perfect maintenance duo.

Rapid Detailer is also an excellent clay bar lubricant and comes as part of the Surface Detailing
Clay Kit.

Pro Tip: If your paintwork is dull you will need to give it a wash and a polish first, and then you can use Rapid Detailer to maintain the polished finish.

Preview: Innotech Aspiron

By John Beltz Snyder / July 16, 2013

It may sound like something that will cure a headache, but the only headache this new, 2014 Aspiron from Innotech will get rid of would have to be caused by a lack of speed. This two-seat track car, uses General Motors’ LS line of V-8 engines, and can be built to the custom specifications of the buyer.

Whether propelled by the 500-horsepower LS3 or the upgraded 1000-horsepower LS9, power goes to the rear wheels via a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission. Its tubular space frame structure, rollover bars, and six-point racing harness keep the occupants safe during a crash, and the use of lightweight materials keeps the weight down. The Aspiron weighs between 1680 and 1890 pounds, depending on spec.

We’ll admit to being nervous when news of an eight-cylinder Bentley Continental GT broke earlier this year. See, the Continental, with its huge, biturbocharged W-12, was renowned for its sheer wall of torque and extremely smooth character.

Photographs by Tyler Alexander

Fifty years after its founding, McLaren remains one of the essential teams in Formula One—and one of the most revered names in motor racing history. Tyler Alexander was there from the very beginning. After joining the new team as a mechanic in 1964, he soon played a critical role in creating its earliest cars, which quickly scored wins in Formula One and dominated the original Can-Am sports-car series. At the same time, Tyler was recording the team’s progress through hundreds of vivid photographs taken during spare moments at the track and behind the scenes at the McLaren factory.

McLaren From The Inside collects the best of Alexander’s images from two very different eras. Part I covers the team’s formative years in the 1960s through black- and-white shots of Bruce McLaren and company building, testing, and racing cars in England and around the world. Friends and competitors are also included, among them such great drivers as Jim Clark, Dan Gurney, and Jackie Stewart, as well as team leaders John Cooper, Carroll Shelby, and Colin Chapman. In Part II, Alexander captures the high-tech, hypercompetitive atmosphere of today’s Formula One with images taken during the first decade of the 21st century. Along with a new generation of driving talent—Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen—Alexander’s lens also focuses on the designers, engineers, mechanics, and other team members who continue to make McLaren so successful today.
